Johnson & Johnson announced Wednesday that it intends to construct a cell therapy manufacturing facility in Montgomery County with an investment exceeding $1 billion. The new plant will be constructed on a 154-acre parcel at 1201 Sumneytown Pike in Spring House, Lower Gwynedd Township, located in Montgomery Country. Johnson & Johnson currently resides approximately one mile from this location at their research and development campus at McKean and Welsh roads.
The Sumneytown Pike property currently includes a 157,000-square-foot structure. The site was purchased in 2022 for $31.5 million.
The manufacturing facility is scheduled to open in 2031 and is projected to generate about 4,000 temporary construction positions along with 500 permanent jobs in biomanufacturing. The development aligns with Johnson & Johnson’s previously disclosed commitment to invest $55 billion by early 2029 to produce the vast majority of its advanced medicines domestically, including innovative cell therapies that rely on living, engineered cells to treat disease.
Pennsylvania is supporting the project with a $41.5 million economic incentive package. The state has also pledged up to $2.5 million through the Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program to help a local community college or technical school establish a workforce development initiative designed to create a talent pipeline for the new facility in Montgomery County.
